Common Dental Problems and Their Correction

Dentistry is a branch of medicine involved in evaluation, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases or conditions of the oral cavity and a dentist is a doctor who practices dentistry. Basic dental hygiene works at keeping teeth diseases at bay and maintaining functional teeth. A regular visit to a dentist is important in order to diagnose any developing problems early enough before they worsen. Teeth problems can start as early as when teeth start to form and is therefore important to have a family dentist early enough to ensure adequate follow up.

A toothache is an aching pain in or around a tooth mostly caused by problems in the teeth or jaw such as cavities, tooth decay, broken teeth and gum disease. Emergence or growth of new teeth can also cause pain. A tooth ache could also be a sign of heart disease and is therefore wise to see a general dentist for proper diagnosis.

Some of the most common dental problems are:

• Dental cavities/decay/caries.

This occurs when bacteria feed on any sugary foods present on the teeth releasing acids that attack the hard teeth structures known as enamel producing holes. Depending on the extent of the destruction your dentist will advise you on the various treatments available to restore the teeth to proper form function and aesthetics. Generally the treatment involves removal of all the decayed matter usually with a dentist drill, and then filling up the space left with dental implants composite resin, porcelain or gold. In cosmetic dentistry, composite resin and porcelain can be made to match the color of the patient's natural teeth. An implant dentist can also use porcelain veneers to protect damaged teeth. A veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over the tooth surface.

• Misalignment of teeth

This is a condition where teeth fail to form on a smooth curve due to either insufficient room causing crowding in the mouth, prolonged thumb sucking or genetic predisposition. Teeth misalignment can be corrected by wire braces fixed on the teeth, or a technique called invisalign. Invisalign allows a dentist to use semi invisible braces which are usually removable to help straighten the teeth by gradually moving the teeth to desired positions using a set of clear aligners.

• Stained teeth

These teeth present themselves with colors other than the normal bright white. Causes of staining include smoking, coffee, tea, drugs or just general poor dental hygiene. Stained teeth can be ugly and can prevent one from having that dream smile. The treatment of stains usually involves some form of a tooth whitening process. A good example is the in-office Zoom teeth Whitening procedure. It is a light-activated treatment that uses a light activated hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching agent called Zoom Gel. A cosmetic dentist applies the gel on teeth that have the discoloration of enamel and dentin, and the specialized light activates the hydrogen peroxide, enabling the bleaching agent to penetrate the surface of the tooth.

In Toronto, which is the capital of Ontario and the largest city in Canada, there are many qualified dentists who offer solutions to such problems and provide advice on general oral health.
